Morris County man charged with eluding cops on motorcycle

DENVILLE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A Morris County man was recently arrested on multiple charges after eluding Denville Township police on his motorcycle.

On Sept. 30, at around 3:15 p.m., police attempted to stop a motorcycle traveling on Route 46 east after observing it driving in a reckless manner – speeding, splitting lanes, and changing lanes without signaling police siad.

However, when signaled to stop, the motorcyclist failed to stop and quickly accelerated away from the officer. After the motorcycle eluded the officer, it was determined that the license plate displayed on the motorcycle was fictitious, police said.

A further investigation subsequently identified the motorcyclist as Travis Schmidt, 31, of Dover, police said.

Schmidt was arrested on Oct. 5 and charged with eluding, falsifying government documents, and tampering with evidence. He was also issued motor vehicle summonses for driving while suspended, careless driving, failure to signal, reckless driving, no liability insurance, speeding, driving an unregistered vehicle, and failure to maintain lane.

Schmidt was then lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility, pending a court appearance. Additional charges related to this incident are pending against Schmidt from both the Mountain Lakes and Rockaway Township Police Departments, police said.

The motorcycle, fictitious plate, and clothing/equipment worn by Schimdt at the time of the incident were also seized as evidence, police said.
