Morristown police search for man who grabbed student’s backpack while walking to school

MORRISTOWN, NJ (Morris County)Morristown police are searching for man who reportedly grabbed a student’s backpack while he was walking to school.

Morristown Police were alerted Monday morning to a report of an unknown person who approached a student walking to school in the area of Sussex Avenue and Mills Street. The student reported this contact to a school resource officer who alerted police.

The student reported that while walking to school, he was approached from behind by a man who grabbed his backpack. The student pulled his backpack free and continued walking to school where he reported this contact, authrotreis said.

The man is described as being a white or Hispanic, approximately 5 feet 4 inches tall, wearing a black shirt with yellow or orange stipes. He has brown hair and diamond stud earrings in both ears.

The suspect was not known to the student, authorities said.

Police are asking anyone with any information or residents who may have surveillance or doorbell cameras in the area of Sussex Street, Mills Street, and Cutler Street to contact Detective Teddy Jones at 973-292-6642, email at t-jones@morristownpolice.org or the dispatch number at 973-538-2200.

Morristown Police have been in contact with School officials and wanted to ensure that this incident was reported to the community.

“Additional officers will be in the area and students and parents are requested to contact us with any information,” authrotreis said.
