Mosquitoes in Sussex County town test positive for Jamestown Canyon Virus

GREEN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – The Sussex County Division of Health, Office of Mosquito Control is investigating a positive Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV) sample of adult mosquitoes in Green Township.

Jamestown Canyon Virus has been found in adult mosquitoes in Sussex County since 2019.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Jamestown Canyon Virus is spread to people by infected mosquitoes. The virus is found throughout much of the United States, but most cases are reported from the upper Midwest. Cases occur from late spring through mid-fall. Fever, headache, and fatigue are common symptoms with Jamestown Canyon virus disease. Jamestown Canyon virus can cause severe disease, including encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). There are no vaccines to prevent or medicines to treat Jamestown Canyon virus infection. Reduce your risk of infection by preventing mosquito bites.

Authorities are urging residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites by applying EPA registered repellents and to return indoors at dusk and dawn during peak mosquito activity.

The Sussex County Office of Mosquito Control will continue to trap and test adult mosquitoes for disease in addition to conducting ultra-low-volume truck applications within the areas of known disease prevalence.
