Honorably discharged veterans would be eligible to receive special license plates under a bill (A133) sponsored by Assemblyman Parker Space and was passed by the Assembly on Monday.
“This is a way to spotlight a veteran’s service and show our gratitude. They have earned this special recognition,” said Space (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris).
While there are license plates that recognize specific branches of the military, decorated veterans, Gold Star family members, and members of veteran organizations, there is not one license plate to honor all veterans. According to veterans’ organizations, New Jersey is the only state that does not offer special license plates for those who have honorably served their country.
Space’s bill would authorize of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to issue special license plates with the word “Veteran” and the name and insignia of the branch of service to honorably discharged veterans. It also allows the surviving spouse of a deceased veteran to retain the plates.
Veterans would need to provide proof of eligibility and pay a nominal fee of $15 to receive the plates.
Assemblyman Hal Wirths (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris) is also a cosponsor. The Senate version of the legislation (S730) is sponsored by Senator Steve Oroho (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris).
