Ongoing phone scam impersonates Morris County Sheriff’s Office

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ – The Morris County Sheriff’s Office has received five reports of attempted fraud and false representation from September to October.

The incidents have individuals identifying themselves as “Sgt. Smith” and “Sgt. Joe Caruso” with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office. There was a separate case where the caller stated they were with Morris Plains,, authorities said.

These callers attempted to request payment from $500 to $7,500 based off old warrants, bail payment, and missing jury duty, sheriff’s office said.

The victims of these attempted crimes called the Morris County Sheriff’s Office to verify, and all were advised the Morris County Sheriff’s Office does not collect money for missing jury duty, request of anyone that they reach out to family members requesting payment for bail, or for payment of outstanding warrants, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office reminds residents never provide sensitive personal information, money, or access to your assets to any unknown individual.
