NEW JERSEY – Legislation sponsored by Senator Steve Oroho that would help attract federal jobs and investment to New Jersey was approved by the Senate Economic Growth Committee.
An office in the Department of Treasury, established under Oroho’s bill (S-1778) would be established for the purpose.
“This bill will help ensure our state gets its fair share of federal jobs and projects from Washington, D.C.,” Oroho (R-24) said. “The feds maintain infrastructure construction and other activity across the nation, often employing hundreds or thousands of local employees.”
In 2018, economic and census data indicated Washington extracted $21 billion more from the state than it returned in federal jobs, programs and infrastructure improvements.
“For too long, the federal government has been treating New Jersey like an automated teller machine, and it is time to balance the scales and get some return on our money,” Oroho said.
The bipartisan legislation is strongly supported by New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program (NJMEP), and it is endorsed as a priority by the Legislative Manufacturing Caucus of New Jersey.
Under the bill, the newly created office would advocate for permanent federal jobs, and acquire and expand civilian military missions in research, development and testing, as well as non-military federal missions and jobs.
“We can no longer sit back and expect the federal government to take care of New Jersey,” Oroho said. “Our state is a prime location for technical, strategic, and innovative initiatives that will help the country and bring long-term jobs to our communities.
“This new office will not only help entice new investment from D.C., but it will also play an active role in mitigating the risk of civilian mission loss or base closure,” Oroho said. “It is time for Washington to do right by New Jersey taxpayers and bring more good-paying career opportunities to the state.”
