Pedestrian dies after being struck by car in Hackettstown

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – A Mansfield Township woman has died after police say she was hit by a car on Friday evening.

The crash happened at around 5:12 p.m. on Willow Grove Street near the American Legion, police said.

Through a preliminary police investigation, it was determined that Sharon Graham, 62, of Independence Township, NJ was traveling in a 2016 Honda northbound on Willow Grove St when she struck Brenda Sargeant, 72, of Mansfield Township, NJ who was attempting to cross the roadway in an easterly direction, police said.

Sargeant was transported to Hackettstown Medical Center, where she later died, police said.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.

Willow Grove St between Connie Terrace and Cindy Terrace was closed for approximately two and half hours, police said.

Assisting at the scene was the Hackettstown Detective Bureau, Hackettstown Rescue Squad, Mount Olive Township Fire Marshal and the Warren County Road Department.

“Hackettstown lost a wonderful woman in Brenda Sargeant. Brenda was a kind soul always willing to be a help to anyone who needed it. She could be seen at the American Legion at the Friday night dinners.
Personally, she always offered me a kind word and always supportive. I will miss her. My deepest sympathies to her husband Paul and her family,” Hackettstown Mayor Maria DiGiovanni said in a Facebook post.
