Phillipsburg police officer killed in off-duty crash

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ (Warren County) – An off-duty Phillipsburg police officer was killed Saturday in a motorcycle crash in Phillipsburg, police said.

Warren County Prosecutor Jim Pfeiffer told lehighvalleylive.com that officer Dominic Belcastro died Saturday evening after a car on a side street pulled out in front of the motorcycle the officer was riding east on Memorial Parkway.

Belcastro had the right of way and the investigation is continuing into possible citations against the driver of the car, Pfeiffer told the news outlet. He did not name the other driver.

Belcastro was riding a Harley-Davidson in the highway’s left lane just after 6:30 p.m. A woman driving a 2000 Toyota Camry was at the stop sign on Firth Street waiting to pull across the highway to the turnaround near the post office, Pfeiffer told the news outlet.

A vehicle in the right lane of the highway drove past the intersection and the Toyota attempted to cross just after, Pfeiffer said. Belcastro, who was wearing a helmet, put down the bike on the road, which is a common crash evasion tactic, but he struck the car as the bike slid past and stopped beyond the intersection, Pfeiffer told lehighvalleylive.com.

Belcastro was pronounced dead at the scene, Pfeiffer told the news outlet.

A GoFundMe page created by Dean Berrigan has raised more than $30,000 for the Belcastro family. If you would like to donate to help out the family, click here.

“Officer Belcastro was a dedicated member of the Police Department and its Honor Guard. In addition, he was a veteran of the United States Army and an Operator with the Warren County Tactical Response Team. Officer Belcastro proudly served the Phillipsburg Police Department for 8 years,” Berrigan said in the post

Officer Belcastro Leaves behind his loving wife and two beautiful daughters, police said.
