Police: Hackettstown QuickChek employee scammed by fake corporate caller
HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – An employee at a Hackettstown QuickChek was scammed Wednesday into taking more than $2,000 from the store as part of a scam, according to police.
On Dec. 21, at around 12:35 p.m., police responded to the Express Mart, located at 321 Mountain Avenue, in reference to a Bitcoin scam, police said.
Upon arrival, officers met with employees from QuickChek, located at 80 Main Street, who advised that an employee received a text message from an individual she believed to be the boss, requesting she send money via Bitcoin to UPS, police said.
The employee then advised that she received a call from “Mike” who identified himself as an employee from corporate and advised that the money was needed for a UPS package being sent to the store. The employee believing that the request was legitimate, took $2,005 from the store and went to the local Coinflip machine, located at the Express Mart, to deposit the money, police said.
The employee received a QR code to scan indicating it was from UPS, police said.
The employee was then contacted by her actual boss who advised her that the call was a scam and to cancel the transaction. The attempt to cancel the transaction was unsuccessful, police said.
Hackettstown police are reminding people to be cautious of any caller demanding immediate payment.
