Police in Hunterdon County town investigate mail thefts, issue warning to residents

READINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) –  Police in Readington Township are warning residents that thieves are snatching outgoing cash, checks and gift cards from mailboxes.

Police said the thieves are targeting mailboxes with the red flags up, signaling the mail carrier that there is outgoing mail, police said.

The thieves will steal cash, checks and gift cards being sent out for the holidays, police said.

“Consider taking any outgoing mail that contains gift cards, checks, etc. directly to the local post office for delivery. Cash should never be sent through the mail,” police said.
