Route 31 lane closure with alternating traffic to begin Tuesday night in Oxford Township

OXFORD TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials Monday announced a single lane closure with alternating traffic beginning tomorrow night on Route 31 in Oxford Townsip.

Beginning at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 8, NJDOT’s Contractor, South State, Inc. is scheduled to close a single lane on Route 31 with alternating traffic between Route 46 and Pequest Road.

The closure is necessary to remove and replace existing guiderail, as well as concrete curbs. In order to minimize the disruption to traffic, work is expected to take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week until it is completed.

Originally, plans called for closing and detouring this section of Route 31 in both directions. However, the work was redesigned to maintain one lane with alternating traffic to minimize the impact to traffic.

Motorists may want to consider using the following alternate routes:

Alternate Car Routes

Route 31 northbound:

  • Traffic on Route 31 northbound may turn right on Janes Chapel Road, which becomes Pequest Road
  • Turn left onto Pequest-Furnace Road back to Route 46

Route 46 to Route 31 southbound:

  • Traffic on Route 46 wishing to take Route 31 southbound may continue on Route 46 eastbound
  • Turn right onto Pequest-Furnace Road
  • Turn right on Pequest Road, which becomes Janes Chapel Road back to Route 31

Alternate Truck Routes

Route 31 northbound:

  • Traffic on Route 31 northbound may turn left Route 57 westbound
  • Turn right onto CR 519/South Bridgeville Road back to Route 46

Route 46 to Route 31 southbound:

  • Traffic on Route 46 eastbound wishing to take Route 31 southbound may turn right onto CR 519/South Bridgeville Road, which is before Route 31
  • Turn left onto Route 57 eastbound back to Route 31

The $6.2 million improvement project includes milling and paving, guiderail and traffic signal replacements, and construction of ADA compliant curbs and ramps on approximately five miles of Route 31 between South Lincoln Avenue/CR 640 and Hawke Point Boulevard in Washington Township and Route 46 in White Township. Milling and paving was completed earlier this year.

The project is anticipated to be complete by fall 2022.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
