Sussex County man found asleep in car with engine running charged with DWI

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Sussex County man is facing several charges including DWI after Sparta Police allegedly found him sleeping in his car with the engine running last week, according to Sparta Township Police Lieutenant John T. Lamon.

Justin Leuzarder, 36, of Sparta Township was charged with driving while intoxicated, obstructing passage of other vehicles, failure to produce license or registration, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, unclear plate, and careless driving.

On July 15 at around 12:30 a.m., an officer checked on a silver Toyota that was partially obstructing a roadway. The officer approached the vehicle and observed a man sleeping in the vehicle, with the engine running and the gear shift in the “drive” position, Lamon said.

The officer woke the driver, who was identified as Leuzarder, and asked him to put his vehicle in the “park” position, Lamon said.

While speaking with Leuzarder, the officer allegedly detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from within the vehicle. He was asked to step out of his vehicle to perform field sobriety tests. After completion of testing, he was arrested and transported to Sparta Police Headquarters, Lamon said.

Leuzarder was later released to a sober adult pending a court appearance.
