Sussex County man found sleeping behind wheel in ShopRite parking lot charged with DWI

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Sussex County man is facing several charges including driving while intoxicated after he was allegedly found sleeping behind the wheel in the Shoprite parking lot in Byram Township, according to police.

On Dec. 9, police responded to the ShopRite parking lot for a report of a suspicious vehicle. When officers arrived, they found a vehicle with brake lights on resting up against the curb, police said.

When officers approached the vehicle, they observed the driver, who was identified Bruno M. Fredes, 23, of Newton, to be sleeping behind the wheel. Officers woke Fredes up, spoke to him and felt he may be intoxicated, police said.

Fredes was asked to perform several field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was arrested and transported to the police station where he refused to submit to breath tests, police said.

Fredes was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to breath samples, careless driving and reckless driving. He was released pending a court appearance.
