Thieves steal 2 cars from Sussex County driveway

VERNON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) -Two vehicles were stolen from a Vernon Township driveway early Tuesday morning and the thieves escaped following a pursuit on County Route 515, according to police.

On October 26 at 4:30 a.m., police responded to the area of Vernon Valley Lake for a report of a suspicious person dressed in dark clothes. The homeowner observed an unknown male was in the resident’s vehicle which was parked in the driveway, police said.

The suspect ran off when confronted by the homeowner and nothing was taken from the vehicle. A thorough search of the area yielded negative results in finding the suspect, police said.

Then at 7:08 a.m., a resident who lives on County Route 517 contacted police and reported their two vehicles were just stolen out of their driveway, police said.

Police responded and the stolen vehicles were spotted by patrol traveling south on County Route 515. Attempts to stop the stolen vehicles were unsuccessful, police said.

While canvassing the scene, police located and recovered an Acura SUV which was reported stolen out of Readington Township, Hunterdon County, police said.

Police remind residents to lock your vehicles, continue to report suspicious people and never leave your keys in your vehicle.
