Traffic stop leads to discovery of loaded handgun in Warren County

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ (Warren County) – A traffic stop earlier this month led to the discovery of a loaded handgun in Phillipsburg, according to the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office.

Tariq Jackson, 32, of Phillipsburg was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, second-degree certain person not to possess a weapon, third-degree possession of a defaced handgun, and fourth-degree possession of prohibited magazine for a handgun.

On Jan. 4, police stopped a vehicle for numerous motor vehicle violations in the area of McKeen Street, authorities said.

During the course of the investigation, Phillipsburg police along with the New Jersey State Police and Pohatcong Township Police searched the vehicle, prosecutor’s office said.

As a result of the search, there was a loaded 9mm handgun recovered along with an extended magazine making the magazine illegal, authorities said.

Jackson is being held in the Warren County Jail pending his next court appearance.
