Two accused of stealing grocery cart full of food from Sussex County ShopRite

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – Two people are accused of stealing a grocery cart full of food from the ShopRite in Sparta Township.

On Dec. 12, officers responded to Shoprite for a shoplifting complaint and upon arrival, they met with a loss prevention employee, police said.

The loss prevention employee informed the officers that a male and a female, who were later identified as Matthew Campaniello 23 of Bushkill, PA and Gaylyn Thatcher 26 of Branchville, loaded a cart up with groceries and walked out of the store without making any attempt to pay for the items totaling $569.76, police said.

The employee stopped Campeniello and Thatcher who were loading the stolen items into their vehicle. Both were then escorted back into the store, police said.

While officers were speaking with Campaniello, he allegedly admitted to shoplifting from Shoprite with Thatcher, police said.

Campaniello and Thatcher were arrested and charged with fourth-degree shoplifting and released pending a court appearance.
