Two westbound lanes on I-80 in Wharton Borough to reopen late Friday, full reopening on track for June 25
WHARTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — Two westbound lanes on Interstate 80 in Wharton are expected to reopen late Friday night, May 30, weather permitting, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced. A full reopening of all lanes in both directions remains on schedule for June 25.
Paving on the westbound lanes was expected to be completed by late Thursday, May 29, or early Friday, May 30. Before reopening, the pavement must cool and dry before striping can occur—a process dependent on weather conditions. Once complete, a barrier curb will be installed to separate the active traffic lanes from ongoing median work. The reopened lanes will use the right lane and shoulder, and the detour at Exit 34B will be lifted.
A reduced speed limit of 45 mph will be in effect on I-80 westbound through the work zone. NJDOT reminds motorists this remains an active construction area and urges drivers to slow down and exercise caution.
Median Repairs Ongoing
All six concrete slabs in the median have been poured. Next steps include weather-sensitive sealant application and multiple layers of asphalt paving. Due to the narrow, active work zone and limited access between live traffic lanes, progress in the median is expected to be slower than on the shoulders. However, the project remains on track for full lane reopening by June 25.
Crews continue to work 24/7 to expedite repairs. NJDOT says it will seek opportunities to accelerate the timeline if possible.
I-80 Eastbound Lanes
Two eastbound lanes reopened on May 21, and the Exit 34 detour was removed. A reduced speed limit of 40 mph remains in effect on I-80 eastbound through the construction zone.
