Woman charged after abandoning cat in Byram ShopRite parking lot

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Woman was charged after she allegedly abandoned a one and half year old cat in the parking lot of the Byram ShopRite.

On Thursday, April 18 at around 7:24 p.m., police responded to an animal complaint at the Shoprite Plaza, police said.

When officers arrived, several witnesses came forward and stated that the suspect, who was identified as Georgina Rodriguez of Washington, NJ, had abandoned a cat in the parking lot, police said.

The cat then ran under the vehicle belonging to Rodriguez before she could leave. Witnesses then confronted Rodriguez and called police, police said.

After a brief investigation involving witness statements and review of surveillance video, Rodriguez was charged with abandoning a domesticated animal. She was released pending a court appearance, police said.

The female cat was taken by the Animal Control Officer and is currently under the care of BARKS and receiving mandatory medical screening.
