A Passaic County woman is facing several charges for allegedly stealing a pickup and then carjacking another vehicle which she crashed into a Phillipsburg gas station Friday.
On Feb. 28, at 11:04 a.m., Washington Township, Morris County police received information that a passerby reported seeing a blue Ford pickup truck heading west on Route 46 with a male in the bed of the truck, police said.
The officer responded to the area of Route 46 and East Ave and located the pickup parked in the middle of the intersection with several people on scene, police said.
The officer began to interview people on scene and it was determined the male who was in the rear of the pickup truck was the owner of the vehicle. He told police that he had gotten into the bed of the truck after an unknown female, who was later identified as Ammany Jafar, 35, of Clifton, had tried to steal his truck from another town. The male indicated that she proceeded to drive west on Route 46, as he was trying to draw attention to other motorists, police said.
After reaching the intersection of Route 46 and East Ave, Jafar began yelling that she needed help from the male that was in the back of the pickup truck, police said.
A male driver of another vehicle, saw the commotion and exited his vehicle to render aid. As this bystander attempted to figure out what was happening, Jafar then jumped into his vehicle and proceeded south on East Avenue. There was a female passenger in the vehicle and after traveling a few hundred feet, Jafar ordered the female occupant out of the car. The female passenger was able to free herself from the motor vehicle unharmed, police said.
The vehicle left the scene and was later found travelling west on Route 57 and that’s when Mansfield Township police pursued the vehicle. Mansfield Police terminated the pursuit near Strykers Road in Lopatcong Township.
The vehicle later crashed into the Valero Deli and Mini Mart on South Main Street in Phillipsburg and Jafar was then taken into custody.
Jafar was charged in Washington Township, Morris County with first-degree carjacking, third-degree endangering another person, fourth-degree endangering another person and two counts of third-degree vehicle theft. She is facing charges in Warren County and is currently lodged in the Warren County Correctional Facility.
