Hackettstown man charged in fatal 2023 Warren County crash

ALLAMUCHY TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – The man behind the wheel in a horrific 2023 crash in Warren County, which left one person dead, has been charged, state police said Friday.

Andrzej Szysko, 51, from Hackettstown was arrested and charged on Jan. 4 with vehicular manslaughter, three counts of assault by auto, death by auto, three counts of aggravated assault, and two counts of causing injury while driving while suspended, authorities said.

The crash happened on Nov. 22, 2023 at around 3:18 p.m., at the intersection of County Road 517 and Ridge Road in Allamuchy Township, state police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a Jeep Wrangler, driven by Szysko, was traveling east on Ridge Road. A Jeep SUV, driven by Lauren M. Gerhold, 33, of Hackettstown, was traveling north on County Road 517 and a Ford Pickup was traveling south on County Route 517, state police said.

At the intersection of County Route 517 and Ridge Road, the Jeep Wrangler impacted the Ford on the passenger side. The Ford was re-directed and impacted the Jeep SUV on the driver’s side.

As a result of this crash, Szysko and the driver of the Ford suffered serious bodily injuries and were flown to a local hospital. Gerhold suffered fatal injuries, authorities said.

Szysko is currently hospitalized and awaiting transport to the Warren County Jail, state police said.
