Hunterdon County man charged in hit-and-run that killed 72-year-old pedestrian

SOMERVILLE, NJ (Somerset County) – A Hunterdon County man has been arrested in a deadly pedestrian crash in Somerville, according to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald.

The crash happened on Friday, April 26, at around 6:10 p.m., near the intersection of Somerset Street and Veterans Memorial Drive, McDonald said.

An on scene investigation determined that Andres Estaban Silva, 33, of Flemington was operating a 2019 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck north on Veterans Memorial Drive making a left turn onto Somerset Street to proceed west when he struck Flordemar E. Huamani-Sanchez, 72, of Somerville, McDonald said.

Following the crash, Silva made a U-turn and left the scene east bound on Veterans Memorial Drive. A short time after the crash, he returned to the scene and parked his vehicle in a parking lot on Somerset Street near the crash site, McDonald said.

Huamani-Sanchez was transported to an area hospital with internal injuries and severe head trauma where she subsequently died from her injuries that evening, McDonald said.

Silva was arrested and charged with second-degree leaving the scene of an accident involving death. He was lodged at the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing, McDonald said.

The investigation remains on-going by Somerville Police Department, the Somerset County Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team (C.A.R.T.) and the Major Crimes Unit.
