Dogbites with Mike Watterston
Fridays: 7:00PM – 10:00PM
My love for music at an early age turned into a lifelong passion. I grew up in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and after graduating high school, my family moved to Hackettstown in 1976—the same year WRNJ signed on the air.
In 1986, I graduated from The Connecticut School of Broadcasting with dreams of becoming the next Vin Scelsa, my broadcasting hero. A few months later, I joined the air staff at Centenary College’s radio station, WNTI, where I launched a show called Dogbites.
By the mid-1990s, WNTI had developed a devoted audience and became a respected force in the world of college radio. My musical tastes span multiple decades and genres, and on any given show you might hear Nirvana, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Miles Davis, and Patti Smith back-to-back. That freedom—and that unpredictability—is what set Dogbites apart.
In 2015, Centenary sold its broadcast license and WNTI transitioned to an internet-only station. I continued hosting Dogbites there until March 2026. After 39 years, I stepped away from WNTI and joined the on-air staff at WRNJ. WRNJ gave me the chance to continue Dogbites exactly as it had always been: an open-format show driven by great music rather than playlists or categories—and to be back on FM radio.
Today, I’m retired and still living in Hackettstown with my wife, Dee. We have two grown children. We are also proud grandparents to two beautiful grandchildren who bring us more joy than words can express.
Radio has opened countless doors for me and has allowed me to meet people, like Vin Scelsa, I likely never would have encountered otherwise. I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue carrying the rock-and-roll torch every Friday night on Northwest Jersey’s Own…RNJ.
