2 face drug charges following traffic stop in Hunterdon County

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) — A traffic stop last month led to the arrest of two Union County residents on drug charges in Clinton Township.

On April 16, an officer observed the driver of a red Nissan Altima commit a motor vehicle violation and stopped the vehicle on Route 22 East near Blossom Hill Road, police said.

The occupants, Taquan K. James, 38, and Angelica L. Kent, 36, both of Plainfield, allegedly exhibited deceptive behavior, and a check revealed the driver’s license was suspended, police said.

The officer requested consent to search the vehicle, which the occupants denied. K-9 Tapko was called to the scene and positively alerted to the presence of narcotics. A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed suspected heroin and suspected crack cocaine, and both individuals were arrested, police said.

At police headquarters, Kent allegedly became combative during processing, police said.

Kent was charged with possession of heroin, possession of crack cocaine, and disorderly conduct. She was also issued motor vehicle summonses for having an open container of alcohol and allowing a suspended driver to operate a vehicle, police said.

James was charged with possession of heroin and possession of crack cocaine. He was also issued motor vehicle summonses for driving with a suspended license, failure to stop or yield, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, open container of alcohol, and unclear plates, police said.

Both were released pending a court appearance.
