5-year-old girl seriously injured, another hurt following 2-vehicle crash in Sussex County

SUSSEX BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – A 5-year-old girl was seriously injured and another person was hurt in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon in Sussex County,  according to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Sergeant Charles Marchan.

The crash occurred around 3:23 p.m. on Route 23 North at milepost 40 in Sussex Borough, Marchan said.

Based on a preliminary investigation, a Hyundai SUV driven by Diego Mendez-Dominguez, 29, of Sussex Borough, and a Toyota SUV driven by Bhaskar Patel, 43, of Budd Lake, were both traveling north on Route 23 when the Toyota began slowing or stopping in traffic and was struck from behind by the Hyundai, Marchan said.

As a result of the crash, Patel sustained minor injuries. Mendez-Dominguez was not injured. A 5-year-old girl passenger from Sussex Borough who was riding in the Hyundai sustained serious injuries, Marchan said.

The crash remains under investigation, Marchan added.
