New Jersey introduces discounted Buddy Fishing License for 2025: Share the sport with friends and family

NEW JERSEY – Are you new to fishing, or interested in introducing friends or family to the sport? New Jersey has exciting news for anglers! Starting in 2025, the state will offer a discounted Buddy Fishing License for pairs of anglers purchasing their licenses together.

The new regulations, which go into effect for the 2025 fishing season, will allow both returning anglers and new anglers to benefit from a substantial discount when they purchase their fishing licenses together in the same transaction. The program also extends the discount to two new anglers who are purchasing licenses for the first time or after a five-year lapse.

The Buddy Fishing License will be available for sale beginning December 2, 2024, and the eligibility requirements are simple:

  • Returning Angler: A returning angler is someone who has purchased at least one fishing license in the past five years. For New Jersey residents, this includes those aged 16-64 who are eligible for a regular resident license but do not qualify for other discounts. Non-residents must be 16 or older.
  • New Angler: A new angler is someone who has never purchased a fishing license or has had a five-year gap (2020-2024) without a New Jersey fishing license.

This program provides an excellent opportunity to introduce new anglers to the sport of fishing, while also rewarding returning anglers for their continued participation. To take advantage of the discount, both licenses must be purchased in the same transaction, either online or at one of the state’s authorized license agents.
