Merrill Creek Reservoir tentatively set to reopen on April 1, after bird flu cases

HARMONY TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County)After a temporary closure due to Avian Influenza, Merrill Creek Reservoir (MCR) is tentatively scheduled to reopen its facilities to the public on April 1, 2025. This date is subject to change, depending on whether conditions continue to improve.

To ensure the health and safety of all visitors, the following precautions must be adhered to:

  • Avoid contact with dead or sick birds: Visitors should refrain from handling any dead or sick birds, as well as bird feces, feathers, or remains. If you spot any deceased or ill birds on the property, immediately call 908-454-3339 to report them.

  • Decontaminate your footwear and gear: Please be prepared to decontaminate your footwear and gear upon arrival, such as using Lysol or hand sanitizer, to prevent the spread of the H5N1 virus. After touching any water at the reservoir, avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth until your hands have been sanitized.

  • Follow all posted signs: To help prevent the spread of the Avian Influenza, visitors must obey all posted warnings and guidelines throughout the property. Pets must be kept on a physical leash at all times. Visitors are also urged not to venture off designated trails.

The Avian Influenza outbreak at MCR has had a severe impact, claiming the lives of hundreds of Snow Geese, several Canada Geese, hawks, crows, and two juvenile Bald Eagles. Efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus are ongoing.

“We appreciate your cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience our temporary closure may have caused,” officials said.
