Hunterdon County installs new grant-funded generator at Route 12 complex

RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County has strengthened its public health infrastructure with the installation of a new emergency generator at its Route 12 Campus in Raritan Township, funded through the Enhancing Local Public Health Infrastructure (ELPHI) Grant.

On May 20, Director John E. Lanza joined Commissioners Jeff Kuhl, Susan J. Soloway and Zach Rich to inspect the newly installed generator, which is intended to ensure continuity of operations during emergencies by supplying backup power to critical county equipment.

“Our public health and safety infrastructure plays a vital role in safeguarding the well-being of Hunterdon County residents,” Lanza said. “The installation of this new generator reinforces our ability to respond effectively to emergencies, ensuring uninterrupted public health and safety services. Additionally, this investment demonstrates this Board’s commitment to preparedness, resilience, and the health and safety of our community.”

The generator project represents a key investment in emergency preparedness. The Route 12 Campus has played a pivotal role in the county’s COVID-19 response efforts, including hosting a drive-through vaccination site that administered more than 25,000 doses and coordinating the distribution of over 305,000 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) to healthcare providers, first responders, and schools.

“This generator upgrade strengthens our emergency preparedness and provides a vital need in future public health responses,” said Karen DeMarco, Health Officer and Director of the Hunterdon County Health Department. “We’re grateful for grant dollars that made the project possible and deeply appreciate the continued support and partnership of the County Commissioners and the Facilities Division in making this project a success.”

Hunterdon County received a full ELPHI grant award of $2,421,561 in 2023 to fund local public health initiatives, including the generator project.
