Video shows Bridgewater detectives rescuing three from floodwaters during July storm

BRIDGEWATER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — Video footage released Friday from body-worn cameras captures the moment two Bridgewater Township police detectives risked their lives to save three people trapped in rising floodwaters during a powerful storm on July 14.

Detectives Barnett and Macchia responded as torrential rain turned township streets into raging rivers, stranding a vehicle that quickly became partially submerged. Footage from both detectives’ body cameras shows the intensity of the floodwaters, with fast-moving debris and currents so strong they nearly pulled one of the occupants backward.

Despite the hazardous conditions, the detectives remained calm and focused. Communicating clearly and acting decisively, they were able to safely guide all three individuals out of the vehicle and away from the water’s path.

“Detectives Barnett and Macchia displayed extraordinary courage and professionalism in the face of rapidly deteriorating conditions,” officials said in a statement. “Their actions likely prevented a tragedy.”

The successful rescue was further aided by a driver from North East Masonry Contractors, whose timely assistance contributed to the outcome. Authorities praised the collaboration and warned the public of the dangers posed by even seemingly shallow floodwaters.

The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the risks first responders face and the life-or-death decisions made in moments of crisis. The full rescue was captured on video, which accompanies this story.
