CLINTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A 44-year-old Flushing, N.Y., man has been charged after police said he attempted to defraud a local resident of more than $21,000 by posing as an FBI agent.
Police said the incident began July 29 when a resident reported receiving a call from a man claiming to be an FBI agent, who warned of unauthorized access to the resident’s bank account. The caller instructed the resident to withdraw $21,000 and deliver it to him to secure the account.
The resident reported the suspicious request, and police set up surveillance at the scheduled meeting spot. Officers observed a black Chevrolet Trailblazer with Virginia plates enter the lot but noted the driver never left his vehicle. After some time, the SUV exited the lot, and police conducted a motor vehicle stop on Payne Road.
The driver provided false credentials and conflicting information about his date of birth, police said. He was identified as Dengjin Chen, 44, of Flushing.
Chen was arrested and charged with attempted theft, exhibiting a false government document, obstruction of justice and hindering apprehension. He also received motor vehicle summonses for disregarding a stop sign, failure to signal, and failure to produce documents.
Police said Chen was transferred to the custody of the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office following his arrest.
