Temporary lane closures scheduled Monday at Route 23 and Newark-Pompton Turnpike in Riverdale

RIVERDALE BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — The intersection at Route 23 and Newark-Pompton Turnpike/Windbeam Road in Riverdale is scheduled to have temporary lane closures Monday as part of the ongoing Route 23, Alexander Avenue to Maple Lake Road project in Pompton Plains and Riverdale, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, September 29, intermittent lane closures will take place at the intersection to allow for roadway restriping. At least one lane on Route 23 will remain open throughout the work.

The closures are needed to prepare for the activation of a new traffic signal at the intersection, which NJDOT said is expected in the coming weeks. The department will provide advance notice before the signal goes live.

The $13.8 million resurfacing project covers about three miles of Route 23 northbound from Alexander Avenue in Pequannock to Interstate 287 in Riverdale. In addition to repaving, the project includes upgrading traffic signals at 10 intersections between Alexander Avenue and Maple Lake Road in Butler. Improvements will include new signal foundations and masts, pedestrian signal heads and push buttons, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and upgraded guiderails in both directions.

NJDOT said the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Portable variable message signs are being used to notify motorists of traffic changes, and the department advised drivers to slow down and use caution while traveling through the work zone.

The timing of the work is subject to weather or other factors. Motorists can check 511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
