Montville police warn of rise in overnight home break-ins targeting car keys

MONTVILLE TONWSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Montville Township police are urging residents to take extra precautions as home invasions targeting vehicle keys continue to rise across Morris County and the state, with criminals increasingly entering homes late at night or early in the morning while families are asleep.

“With home invasions on the rise across the state, Morris County communities, including Montville, are seeing more incidents where criminals enter homes to steal car keys for vehicles parked outside,” police said in a statement. Officers noted that suspects are breaking in specifically to access high-value vehicles left in driveways.

Police said some individuals scouting neighborhoods have been known to wear delivery-style clothing — including Amazon and Grubhub jackets — to avoid drawing attention. “Regardless of the disguise, the goal is the same: look for easy opportunities,” the department said.

Authorities are urging residents to lock doors, windows and vehicles; keep car keys out of sight from exterior windows; and park inside garages when possible. They also recommended using security cameras, doorbell systems, alarms and simple chimes that alert homeowners if a door or window opens during the night.

“Small steps like these help protect families and give police a better chance of responding quickly and catching those responsible,” the department said. “Let’s work together, stay alert, and make this holiday season safe and crime-free.”

Police thanked officers across the state who continue to investigate, pursue and apprehend individuals responsible for the crimes. They encouraged residents to contact authorities immediately to report any suspicious activity.
