Man, dog found dead after house fire in Sussex County

VERNON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A 46-year-old man and a dog were found dead early Friday after a house fire in Vernon Township, authorities said.

Emergency responders were dispatched at about 4:49 a.m. to a second-alarm structure fire at a home on Odell Road, according to the Vernon Township Police Department.

Arriving crews found the structure fully engulfed in flames and worked to extinguish the fire. After bringing the blaze under control, firefighters discovered the body of a 46-year-old man inside the residence. A dog was also found deceased in the home, police said.

The Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, Sussex County Fire Marshal and Vernon Township police detectives responded to the scene. Vernon Township Animal Control also assisted.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
