Three men arrested after occupied home burglary, police pursuit in Somerset County
WARREN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — Three men were arrested Sunday following an early morning incident involving a home burglary, a stolen vehicle and a police pursuit in Warren Township, authorities said.
According to Police Chief Robert W. Ferreiro, officers responded at approximately 4:10 a.m. Sunday, March 29, to a 911 call reporting individuals attempting to enter an occupied residence.
Responding officers located a vehicle at the scene that was later determined to be stolen. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it drove toward them, striking a police vehicle before fleeing at a high rate of speed, police said.
Officers initiated a pursuit and deployed a tire deflation device. The vehicle was followed for several miles before becoming disabled. Three occupants then attempted to flee on foot but were taken into custody.
Police identified the suspects as Jalen A. Cherenfant, 20, of Irvington; Lamont L. Crumbley, 21, of Irvington; and Abdul W. Stewart, 19, of East Orange.
Cherenfant was charged with second-degree burglary of an occupied residence, second-degree conspiracy, second-degree eluding, third-degree receiving stolen property, and disorderly persons offenses including possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief.
Crumbley and Stewart were each charged with second-degree burglary of an occupied residence, second-degree conspiracy, fourth-degree eluding, third-degree receiving stolen property, and disorderly persons offenses including possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief.
Chief Ferreiro said the department remains committed to protecting residents.
“Our residents have the right to feel safe in their homes—not worried—and we will continue to take swift and deliberate action against those who threaten that sense of security. Crimes involving residential burglaries, whether homes are occupied or unoccupied, are taken seriously, and those responsible will be pursued and held accountable.”
Multiple agencies assisted in the incident, including the Bernards Township Police Department, Watchung Police Department, Long Hill Township Police Department, Somerset County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit and the New Jersey State Police Somerville Station.
