Lane closures on I-280 eastbound Friday night for bridge work over Passaic River
EAST HANOVER TONWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Motorists traveling on Interstate 280 in Morris and Essex counties should expect lane closures and delays Friday night as crews shift traffic on a bridge over the Passaic River, state transportation officials said.
Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, May 1, through 6 a.m. Saturday, May 2, a single lane on I-280 eastbound will be closed before the bridge between East Hanover and Roseland. One lane will remain open overnight.
The closures are needed to place barriers, restripe the roadway and implement a traffic shift as part of ongoing construction that began in April. A single lane may also be closed on I-280 westbound to assist with the traffic shift.
By early Saturday morning, two lanes of traffic are expected to be restored in both directions. However, the eastbound traffic pattern will change, with the left lane shifted onto a temporary median crossover and the right lane moved onto the shoulder.
Drivers heading east who plan to take Exit 4A or 4B will need to stay in the right lane, as the exit will not be accessible from the left lane under the new configuration.
Officials said the traffic pattern is expected to remain in place for about six months to allow for bridge demolition and reconstruction work. Westbound traffic will remain in its current configuration.
The $12 million federally funded project will replace the eastbound bridge deck and includes additional improvements such as guiderail replacement, installation of a wildlife fence and upgrades to bridge supports. Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2029.
Officials advised motorists to slow down, use caution and consider checking real-time traffic conditions before traveling.
