Ramp from Howard Boulevard to I-80 eastbound closed for two weeks in Mount Arlington
MOUNT ARLINGTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — The ramp from Howard Boulevard northbound to Interstate 80 eastbound in Mount Arlington is now closed and is expected to remain shut for approximately two weeks as part of an ongoing bridge replacement project, transportation officials said.
The closure began at 3 a.m. Monday, May 4, and is scheduled to continue through 6 p.m. Friday, May 15. The shutdown is necessary for concrete barrier work, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Motorists traveling north on Howard Boulevard seeking access to I-80 eastbound are being detoured to continue north and take the ramp to I-80 westbound, then use Exit 27A to Route 206 southbound before rejoining I-80 eastbound.
The ramp closure is part of a $65.4 million federally funded project to replace the bridges carrying I-80 over Howard Boulevard, which officials say are in poor condition.
The project includes raising bridge clearances, widening shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes, and improving ramps and the Howard Boulevard intersection. Plans also call for upgraded traffic signals and lighting, as well as ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks, including extended pedestrian access to the Mount Arlington Train Station.
Construction is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
Officials said the schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors and advised motorists to check 511nj.org for real-time traffic updates.
