HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — Hunterdon County is continuing to expand its huntHISTORY digital platform, which provides information about historic sites and markers across the county through interactive maps, timelines and researched narratives.
Natalie Zaman, head of the county’s Cultural and Heritage Division, recently presented an update on the initiative to the Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners.
The platform was launched nearly a decade ago by the Hunterdon County Cultural & Heritage Commission to increase awareness of more than 170 historic markers throughout the county.
“Hunterdon County has an extraordinary history that deserves to be shared with current and future generations,” said Commissioner Zach Rich. “huntHISTORY allows us to tell the stories behind the places that shaped our communities through engaging digital content that is accessible to everyone. It encourages exploration, supports education, and ensures these important stories remain available for generations to come.”
Over the past four years, the Cultural & Heritage Commission has secured more than $30,000 in grants from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and the New Jersey Historical Commission to develop additional content for the platform, according to the county.
The huntHISTORY website features an interactive map that directs users to historic sites throughout Hunterdon County. Each featured location includes an introduction, illustrated infographics and a researched historical narrative with endnotes.
The platform is designed for residents and visitors interested in local history as well as students using the material for research.
Users can also search a timeline of Hunterdon County history and access a calendar of local history events.
The content is available through the Explore Hunterdon and Hunterdon County websites. QR codes placed on participating historic markers also provide access to information about individual locations.
County officials expect huntHISTORY to include about 35 fully developed historic sites by the end of 2026. Plans call for an additional four to five locations to be added each year.
Officials said the project will also be part of Hunterdon County’s America 250 observance, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.
