NEW JERSEY — New Jersey residents are among the nation’s best budgeters, according to a new WalletHub study that ranked the Garden State No. 10 in the country for financial responsibility.
The personal finance company released its 2026 report on states with the best and worst budgeters as Americans continue to contend with higher living costs.
WalletHub compared all 50 states across 12 metrics designed to measure how well residents manage their finances. The analysis included average credit scores, debt-to-income ratios, credit utilization and foreclosure rates.
New Jersey ranked third nationally for non-mortgage debt as a percentage of income and fourth for credit utilization percentage.
The state also ranked sixth for the percentage of total non-housing expenses compared with median income.
New Jersey placed 11th for housing expenses as a percentage of median home price and 19th for average credit score.
Overall, those results placed New Jersey 10th among the 50 states for the best budgeters in 2026.
