SADDLE BROOK TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Bergen County) — New Jersey State Police are seeking the public’s help after a Saddle Brook Township police officer was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 80 early Sunday morning.
At about 4:34 a.m., the officer was conducting a traffic stop involving a gray Nissan Maxima on I-80 east at milepost 62.4, according to state police. The Maxima was stopped in the highway’s deceleration lane.
While the officer was outside the vehicle, an unknown vehicle traveling east struck the left side of the Maxima and the officer, state police said. The vehicle then left the scene.
The officer sustained serious injuries. The three occupants of the Nissan were not injured.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about what happened before, during or after the crash is asked to contact the State Police Troop B Totowa Station at 973-785-9412. Anonymous tips are welcome.
State police also reminded drivers of New Jersey’s Move Over Law, which requires motorists approaching stopped emergency responders, law enforcement officers, tow truck operators, highway workers or disabled vehicles with flashing lights to safely move over one lane when possible. If drivers cannot safely move over, they are required to slow down below the posted speed limit and be prepared to stop.
