NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Project Self-Sufficiency is seeking food and monetary donations to help provide Thanksgiving dinners to more than 500 local families in need this holiday season.

Donors can sponsor a family for $50, make a contribution of any amount or donate in honor of a loved one.

According to the organization, monetary donations are particularly needed as it prepares to distribute complete Thanksgiving dinners to approximately 500 families.

“Requests for assistance are pouring in every day, and we expect to serve more than 500 families this year,” explains Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “However, our wonderfully generous community has consistently demonstrated compassion towards our participants during the holidays, and we are confident that this year will be no exception.“

The organization is requesting donations of pumpkin or apple pies, canned vegetables, yams, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, gravy, stuffing and mashed potato mixes.

Contributions, or notification of plans to donate, are requested by Friday, Nov. 13, to allow sufficient time to organize, package and distribute the food.

Frozen turkeys will be accepted Wednesday, Nov. 18, and Thursday, Nov. 19. Donors planning to contribute frozen turkeys are asked to notify the organization in advance.

Project Self-Sufficiency said frozen turkeys cannot be accepted before or after those dates because of limited refrigerated storage space.

Thanksgiving donations can be dropped off at Project Self-Sufficiency, located at 127 Mill St. in Newton.

Individuals and families who need assistance with Thanksgiving meals are also encouraged to contact the organization.
