Ricardo the bull, who wandered onto Newark train tracks in 2023, enjoying life at Sussex County animal sanctuary
WANTAGE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — Ricardo the bull, who captured national attention after wandering onto railroad tracks near Newark Penn Station in 2023, is enjoying life at a Sussex County animal sanctuary.
Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue, located in Wantage Township, shared new photos of Ricardo on Thursday, describing the longhorn steer as friendly and playful.
“Super handsome, super friendly, super playful, slaughterhouse escapee, Ricardo loving his life,” the sanctuary wrote.
The organization also expressed gratitude that Ricardo survived, writing, “What a good boy.. Thank God he wasn’t murdered and eaten…”
Ricardo became a familiar name across New Jersey in December 2023 after wandering onto railroad tracks near Newark Penn Station during the morning rush hour, temporarily disrupting NJ TRANSIT rail service.
The Texas longhorn steer was eventually captured after the incident and relocated to Skylands Animal Sanctuary in Wantage Township, where he has remained.
The sanctuary describes Ricardo as a slaughterhouse escapee. His appearance near Newark Penn Station attracted national attention.
Nearly three years after the incident, Ricardo continues to live at the Sussex County sanctuary, which says he is enjoying life and recently shared photographs showing how he is doing.
