The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline rose 16 cents over the past week to $4.43 as crude oil prices remained elevated, according to AAA.
As of Thursday, the national average stood at $4.4386 per gallon, up from $4.2770 a week ago and $4.0636 a month ago. A year ago, the national average was $3.2003, making current prices more than $1.20 higher.
AAA said crude oil has been averaging about $100 per barrel amid continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz. Gas prices have returned to levels seen earlier this spring and are approaching the 2026 high of $4.56 per gallon, recorded May 21. The all-time national record is $5.01 per gallon, set June 14, 2022.
New data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration showed gasoline demand increased from 8.55 million barrels per day to 8.79 million barrels per day last week.
Domestic gasoline supplies increased from 206.9 million barrels to 207.7 million barrels, while gasoline production rose from 9.3 million barrels per day to 9.6 million barrels per day.
West Texas Intermediate crude fell $3.40 Wednesday to settle at $102.43 per barrel. U.S. crude oil inventories decreased by 600,000 barrels to 423.4 million barrels, about 1% above the five-year average, according to the EIA.
California had the nation’s highest average gasoline price at $6.08 per gallon, followed by Washington at $5.57 and Hawaii at $5.48. Indiana had the lowest average at $3.92, followed by Texas and Mississippi at $3.93.
Meanwhile, the national average price for electricity at a public electric vehicle charging station remained unchanged at 42 cents per kilowatt-hour.
New Jersey was among the 10 most expensive states for public EV charging, with an average of 45 cents per kilowatt-hour, according to AAA. West Virginia and Hawaii had the highest averages at 52 cents per kilowatt-hour.
