Blairstown police welcome K-9 Riggs to the force
BLAIRSTOWN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – The Blairstown Police Department has welcomed a new four-legged member to its team.
The department recently announced the addition of K-9 Riggs, a 2-year-old Czechoslovakian Shepherd imported from Czechoslovakia. Riggs and Corporal Herzer graduated together from the Union County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Academy in December. The team has already begun their work, and Riggs is expected to play a significant role in the department’s efforts to enhance public safety in Blairstown.
K-9 Riggs was named after a vote from Blairstown Elementary School students, who selected the name, which has quickly become a beloved part of the community.
Cpl. Herzer is following in his family’s proud tradition of K-9 handling. His father, a retired officer from the Irvington Police Department, also served as a K-9 handler during his career.
The Blairstown Police Department extends its heartfelt gratitude to the generous donor who made the K-9 program possible. Special thanks are also given to the following supporters: Dr. John at Animal Mansion for donating veterinary services, Tickner’s in Hackettstown for generously donating all of Riggs’ dog food, and Blake at Blue Streak K-9 for assisting with Riggs’ purchase using donation funds.
The department would also like to honor the memory of K-9 Caster, who passed away on January 8, 2023.
