Body of missing boater recovered from Lake Hopatcong

LAKE HOPATCONG, NJ – A missing boater’s body was recovered from Lake Hopatcong Tuesday, according to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Sergeant Philip Curry.

On Monday, July 24 at 1:59 p.m., troopers responded to Henderson Cove on Lake Hopatcong for a report of an overdue boater, Curry said.

Upon arrival, troopers were alerted an unoccupied vessel that had drifted into a dock on Thompson Lane in Hopatcong Borough. The Initial search of the area had negative results, Curry said.

Then on Tuesday, July 25, NJ State Police Marine Services Bureau located the victim below the surface of the water, Curry said.

NJ State Police T.E.A.M.S. Unit divers recovered the deceased victim, who was identified as the vessel’s owner, Edward Sikora, 80, of Upper Saddle River, Curry said.

The official cause of death is pending autopsy and the case remains under investigation, Curry said.
