Centenary University congratulates former president Dale Caldwell on appointment as New Jersey secretary of state
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Warren County) — Centenary University on Wednesday issued a statement congratulating former university president Dale G. Caldwell, Ed.D., on his appointment as New Jersey’s next secretary of state. Dr. Caldwell, who had served as Centenary’s president since July 1, 2023, was elected lieutenant governor in the recent general election.
“Centenary University proudly congratulates Dale G. Caldwell, Ed.D., who was recently elected New Jersey’s lieutenant governor and has now been appointed New Jersey secretary of state. Dr. Caldwell served as president of Centenary University for more than two years, leading the institution through a period of renewed vision, strengthened partnerships, and student-focused growth.”
The university said Dr. Caldwell’s new role reflects his long-standing dedication to service, education and community leadership.
“Dr. Caldwell’s appointment reflects his deep commitment to public service, education, and community engagement—values that align closely with Centenary’s mission. The University celebrates this historic milestone and joins the State of New Jersey in recognizing his contributions.”
Centenary’s Board of Trustees praised his tenure and his continued service to the state.
“Centenary’s Board of Trustees is proud of Dr. Caldwell’s service to Centenary University and his continued dedication to the people of New Jersey. The board believes his statewide leadership will bring increased visibility to the importance of education, workforce development, and community partnerships—areas that remain central to Centenary’s mission.”
As lieutenant governor and secretary of state, Dr. Caldwell will oversee initiatives related to civic participation, cultural affairs, public engagement and community revitalization.

Bishop John R. Schol began his tenure as the university’s 16th president on Dec. 1 and will serve a two-year term.
