Centenary University to hold memorial service for former First Lady Jeanne Picariello Murphy on Jan. 14

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – A memorial service in remembrance of Jeanne Picariello Murphy, former First Lady of Centenary University, will be held on Tuesday, January 14, at 3:00 p.m. in the George H. Whitney Chapel, located in the Seay Building at Centenary University, 400 Jefferson Street, Hackettstown.

Murphy, 70, of Hackettstown, tragically passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2023, from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run accident while out on a walk near her home.

Murphy was a retired U.S. Army colonel and the wife of former Centenary University President Bruce Murphy, Ed.D. On the morning of Saturday, January 7, 2023, she was struck by a vehicle on Reese Avenue near First Avenue around 7:30 a.m.

The driver fled the scene, and Murphy was immediately transported to Hackettstown Medical Center before being flown to Morristown Medical Center. She was pronounced dead the following day at 12:00 p.m., according to police.

The driver of the vehicle, 25-year-old Jefferson Chimbo-Pelaez of Hackettstown, was later apprehended and charged in connection with the incident.

The community is invited to attend the memorial service to honor Murphy’s life and legacy.
