CLINTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Town of Clinton Police Department is warning residents and business owners to be on alert after seeing an increase in counterfeit currency circulating in the community.
In a public safety alert, police urged the public to take extra precautions when handling cash and to learn how to spot fake bills.
According to the department, there are several ways to identify counterfeit money:
- Feel the paper: Genuine U.S. currency has a distinct texture.
- Check for watermarks: Hold the bill up to the light to reveal a faint image.
- Look for security threads: Authentic bills contain a thin embedded strip.
- Watch for color-shifting ink: On newer bills, the denomination number in the lower right corner changes color when tilted.
Police advised residents not to spend any suspected counterfeit bills.
“If you suspect you have counterfeit money, do not spend it,” the department said. “Contact us immediately at 908-735-8611.”
