Driver arrested after refusing traffic stop, crashing in Morris County, police say

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A driver was arrested on charges of eluding police and driving while intoxicated after refusing to stop for officers and later crashing in Washington Township, authorities said.

Police said an officer monitoring traffic in the Long Valley Center on West Mill Road saw a vehicle speeding, swerving, and failing to maintain its lane. The officer activated emergency lights to initiate a stop, but the driver did not yield and continued westbound, accelerating and creating a hazardous situation.

The officer ended the attempt to stop the vehicle for safety reasons. A short time later, the same vehicle was seen traveling eastbound on West Mill Road and was discovered to have left the roadway and crashed into a wooded area.

Officers extricated the driver, who was determined to be intoxicated, police said. The driver, whose identity was not released, was taken to a hospital for treatment and later transported to the Morris County Correctional Facility pending a court appearance.

The driver faces charges of eluding, driving while intoxicated, and several motor vehicle violations.
