Erratic driver complaint leads to DWI arrest in Hackettstown

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – A Morris County man is facing a driving while intoxicated charge after he was allegedly driving erratically in Hackettstown Monday evening.

On Sept. 4, at around 6:28 p.m., police responded to the area of 80 Main Street for a report of an erratic vehicle. The vehicle reportedly was unable to maintain lanes and the vehicle’s front bumper was hanging, police said.

The officer observed the suspect’s vehicle on Valentine Street making a U-turn in the middle of traffic. The officer had his emergency lights and siren activated and the vehicle then turned into a parking lot and stopped, police said.

The driver was identified as Joseph Banghart Jr., 52, of Budd Lake and while the officer was speaking to Banghart, the officer detected the odor of alcoholic beverage, police said.

Banghart was charged with driving while intoxicated, and reckless driving. He was released pending a court appearance, police said.
