Fire destroys chicken coop in Sussex County

STILLWATER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — Firefighters extinguished a fully involved chicken coop fire Monday afternoon that burned about 20 feet from a residence in the Swartswood State Park area of Stillwater Township, officials said.

The first alarm was dispatched at approximately 4 p.m. for a reported structure fire. The fire chief arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire.

A four-wheel-drive engine was the first apparatus to reach the scene, navigating an icy driveway to access the property. Crews stretched a handline to attack the blaze, and additional water was supplied by a tanker.

After assessing the situation, the incident commander downgraded the response, canceling a rapid intervention team and an air support unit from neighboring departments.

Fire departments from Stillwater, Hampton, Fredon and Branchville operated at the scene for about an hour, conducting suppression and overhaul operations before clearing.

It was not immediately known whether any chickens were inside the coop at the time of the fire.
