Firefighters extinguish tractor-trailer fire on I-80 in Sussex County

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — Firefighters extinguished a tractor-trailer fire on Interestate 80 eastbound early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The blaze was reported at approximately 12:22 a.m. near the 23.2 mile marker, according to the Byram Fire Department. Firefighters from Byram, Netcong, and Green Township responded and found the tractor-trailer fully engulfed in flames. A tanker response from Allamuchy Fire was immediately requested.

The bulk of the fire was knocked down quickly, but officials said extensive overhaul operations were needed. Additional tankers from Budd Lake and Hope Township were brought in to provide water supply.

After several hours of suppression and overhaul, the fire was fully extinguished, and all units cleared the scene around 3 a.m.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.
